Aline Cristina Fortunato Cruvinel

I am an Architect and Urbanist (USP) with a PhD and a Master’s degree in Urbanism (UFRJ), and a specialization in Urban Sociology (UERJ). My doctoral research examined how short-term rental capital circulates through labor and land rent in economies on the periphery of global capitalism, focusing on Airbnb in Rio de Janeiro. My work combines historical-dialectical materialism with large-scale data analysis, using Python, SQL, and GIS to examine contemporary urban transformations.

My professional trajectory is grounded in this critical tradition, drawing particularly on Milton Santos, David Harvey, Paulo Freire, and the founders of Marxist Dependency Theory. This theoretical foundation shapes my research practice, guiding my analysis of housing, urban political economy, poverty, and the working class. I examine how capital accumulation and structural dependency shape urban space and everyday life, conducting research across multiple scales, from neighborhoods and Brazilian cities to Latin America and the global level. The guiding principle of my work is to contribute to critical awareness, collective knowledge production, and both research and social autonomy.

In recent years, I have been actively involved in several research groups and institutional initiatives. Between 2018 and 2021, I was a member of the Collective for Studies on Urbanism and Peripheries (PERIFAU/FAU/UFRJ) and the Law and Urbanism Lab (LADU). In 2022, I joined the Study Group on Marxist Dependency Theory at the Vânia Bambirra School of Political Education for the Working Class (GE-TMD/EFoP). I later served on the Technical Committee of the IAB/RJ Archive and was a researcher at the Urban Analysis and Digital Representation Lab (2022–2025). In 2024, I collaborated with the Global Observatory on Short-Term Rentals (OGAT) and the Public Space and Right to the City Lab (LabCidade/FAUUSP) on a project funded by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation (Brazil and Paraguay).
